Custom ore generation revival mod

This wiki was created to provide users with the ability to find the documentation that was provided on the now non-existing Custom Ore Generation Shout wiki.

All info was obtained via a copy on Archive.org, and featuring the latest revision of each page provided. Some pages have been tweaked to fit into the wikia format.

Info about the Mod

This wiki is meant to document the original information provided by the original developer of the CustomOreGen mod by JRoush.

Currently CustomOreGen is maintained and developed by lawremi.

What is CustomOreGen?

CustomOreGen is a mod for Minecraft that allows the player to decide what ores are generated in their worlds and how they are distributed. It offers several custom-written distributions in addition to the vanilla «cluster» distribution. It also supports mod-added ores and biomes.

Customization is the main goal of this mod. Every aspect of the ore generation can be changed through the flexible config file. Distributions can be easily added and removed. Multiple options can be provided, allowing the player to choose between them with an in-game menu. Conditional branches, mathematical expressions, and other advanced features are supported.

To report bugs, provide feedback, or share distribution settings, visit the mod’s Github Page.

Customization

CustomOreGen can be fully customized through the config file and the options file(s). The config file is written in XML and contains every detail of COG’s ore generation. The options file is written in plain text and provides a simple way to adjust certain features in the config file without actually editing it.

CustomOreGen comes packaged with a standard configuration that supports the vanilla ores and a variety of mod-added ores, biomes, and dimensions.

All configuration is handled by the server. For single-player/LAN worlds this is the integrated server bundled with the client. For true multiplayer worlds it is the stand-alone server.

COG offers some special debugging features to make experimenting with the configuration easier.

Client Install

This mod requires Minecraft Forge. You must download and install this before installing the mod.

Minecraft Forge is an extensive API used by a large community of mods. It has many features, changes many core minecraft files, and updates frequently. All COG features work with Forge.

Installation of Minecraft Forge and mods falls out of the scope of this wiki! Usage of MultiMC is strongly recommended!

Server Install

Because terrain generation is handled entirely by the server in multiplayer, only the server needs to have CustomOreGen installed. Players generally do not need to modify their client to play on a server with CustomOreGen. However, wireframe models and custom mystcraft symbols require client-side rendering. Players will need to install COG on their client to see the wireframe models and custom mystcraft symbols.

Only the Mojang server is supported at this time; there is no port for Bukkit.

If you are a server operator, you need to download and install Minecraft Forge. Forge is an extensive API used by a large community of mods.

Once you have installed Forge, download the mod on the CurseForge Page and place the archive in the »/mods» folder of your server.

An unofficial version for 1.12 has been released by Marxisthobo, which can be downloaded here.

Simple Ore Generation [1.12.2] [1.11.2] [1.10.2] [1.9.4]

Simple Ore Generation:

Simple Ore Generation:

AppDataRoaming.minecraftmods

Custom Ore Gen

1. Windows 7 — 64-

2. Core i3; 4gb RAM; geforce 660.

Debugging Mode

Debugging Mode is a set of features intended to help people experiment with the mod outside of normal everyday use. It includes chat commands to modify various mod parameters and wireframe models for distributions that support them.

Debugging Mode is enabled through the «debugMode» config option. It can be enabled for both the integrated server in the client and the stand-alone server.

Console Commands

CustomOreGen recognizes 17 debugging commands which can be entered through the chat bar just like regular server commands. To use debugging commands, you must:

  • Enable Debugging Mode in the server config file (except for /cogEnableDebugging; this command does not require debugging mode).
  • Have access to «cheat» codes (be Opped, in Creative mode, etc).

Commands issued by a player affect the configuration for the dimension in which the player is standing. Most commands can also be issued from the command line of the dedicated server, in which case the an additional argument (the target dimension ID) must be provided before the regular command arguments. For example, when issuing the /cog command from the dedicated server the syntax is /cog [distribution] [setting] [detail] .

The command names are case-sensitive (so «/cog» is valid, but «/cog» won’t be recognized). Some of the command arguments are case sensitive as well, but most are not. Remember that the /? and /help commands can be used to get the names and usage for all server commands.

Many commands take a «distribution» or «option» argument. This should be the name set in the config file. A regular expression can also be used to affect multiple distributions or options with a command (for example «.*» will target all distributions or options). Note that minecraft uses spaces to separate command arguments. While names with spaces in them are perfectly valid in the config file, they cannot be used directly in console commands.

All changes made by these commands are temporary and will be reset when the config file is reloaded.

When entering distribution settings the format is generally the same as in the config file. Unlike the config file, however, entering an invalid setting with these commands will not pull up an error dialog. Instead, it will an error message in the chat bar and disable the affected distributions so they cannot generate.

Command Name Arguments Description
/cogEnableDebugging Enable debugging mode. This command is unique in that it is visible even when debugging mode is off. This provides a way to turn on debugging mode and gain access to the other commands without restarting the client or server. Pass False to turn debugging mode off instead.
/cog s a list of the named distributions. Use a regular expression to multiple distributions (i.e. «.*» to them all). If a setting name is provided, the value of that setting is ed for each listed distribution. Use a regular expression to match multiple settings. If the detail argument is provided and is True then a description of the setting and any additional rmation (like a complete list of blocks matching a block descriptor) will also be ed.
/cogWireframeMode Sets the client-side wireframe rendering mode. Unlike other commands, this affects only the client that issues it and not the server itself. This command cannot be issued from a dedicated server.
  • None means that all wireframes are n.
  • Wireframe renders wireframe models.
  • WireframeOverlay renders wireframe models on top of everything else, so they can be seen through solid objects.
  • Polygon renders solid models, although they may still be partially transparent.
/cogClear Clears cached structure rmation. If no distribution name is given, clears cache for all distributions. Cached rmation is regenerated automatically as needed, so this command will not prevent the mod from working normally. It exists mainly as a diagnostic .
/cogRegen Removed. As of COG [1.3.2]v1, this command is no longer recognized.
/cogPopulate Places ore from the specified distribution in all chunks within the specified range (in chunks) around the center X/Z position (in block coordinates). Chunks are generated first if necessary. Omit the distribution name to place ore from all loaded distributions. Omit the X/Z coordinates to use the coordinates of the issuing player. When issuing this command from a dedicated server all arguments are required.

If used carefully with Substitute distributions to remove existing ore this command can safely add COG ore distributions to existing worlds.

/cogParent Sets the parent distribution — this has the same effect as nesting the distribution in the config file. The «parent» argument should match the name of a distribution of the correct type.
/cogAddOreBlock Adds an ore block. The «block» and «weight» arguments should be in the same format as used in the config file. This command will only add ore blocks; it cannot remove or change any that are already in the list.
/cogSetOreBlock Sets the ore block. The «block» and «weight» arguments should be in the same format as used in the config file.
/cogAddReplaceable Adds a replaceable block. The «block» and «weight» arguments should be in the same format as used in the config file. This command will only add replaceable blocks; it cannot remove or change any that are already in the list.
/cogSetReplaceable Sets the replaceable block. The «block» and «weight» arguments should be in the same format as used in the config file.
/cogAddBiome Adds a target biome. The «biomeName» and «weight» arguments should be in the same format as used in the config file. This command will only add biomes; it cannot remove or change any that are already in the list.
/cogSetBiome Sets the target biome. The «biomeName» and «weight» arguments should be in the same format as used in the config file.
/cogSetting Change a distribution setting. Setting names, average, range, and type arguments should be in the same format as used in the config file.
/cogSettingEx Change a distribution attribute or special parameter. Setting names and values are the same as the corresponding attributes in the config file (for example the «branchType» or «drawWireframe» attributes for Veins distributions).
/cogOption s a list of the named options and their values. Use a regular expression to multiple options (i.e. «.*» to them all). If the detail argument is provided and is True then a description of the option will also be ed.
/cogOption Change an option value.
/cogLoadConfig Reload the dimension configuration. Any changes previously made to options or distributions are lost.

Wireframe Models

In debugging mode, CustomOreGen will internally store the position and geometry of all Veins, Cloud, and StandardGen distributions. This rmation can be transmitted to the client and displayed on-screen in the form of wireframe models. To see the wireframe models, you must:

  • Enable Debugging Mode in the server config file.
  • Set drawWireframe=’true’ for each distribution you wish to see in the server config file. The «Distribution Wireframes» option does this en-mass.
  • Have access to «cheat» codes (be Opped, in Creative mode, etc).
  • Install Minecraft Forge on the client.
  • Set the client Wireframe rendering mode to something other than «None» using the /cogWireframeMode command.

Options

Options are variables used to control how a config file loads. They work like this:

  1. An option is defined in the config file with a name and a set of possible values.
  2. The value of the option is loaded from an option file.
  3. The option value is used later in the config file to change what distributions are loaded or their settings.

Options are useful because they allow a config file to produce many different configurations. For example, the global config might contain both ore Veins and Clouds and use an option to decide which is generated. Each world can then have its own value for that option depending on whether the player wants veins or clouds in that world. This gives the player some freedom without having to set up separate configs for each world. With a few well-chosen options, the player might not have to open the config file at all.

Options are defined using the and elements. See Option Types for details.

Option values are available in expressions by using the option name like a variable. Choice options can be referenced directly by the conditional element.

In debugging mode the /cogOption command can be used to temporarily change an option value.

Option Files

CustomOreGen Option files are named CustomOreGen_Options.txt. One will be created for each new world in the world save folder. This file is written in name=value form and lines that begin with a ‘#’ are s. The file can be modified by the player if necessary (changes will take effect when the world is reloaded or the /cogLoadConfig command is used). A dimension in a saved world can be given its own options file by placing the file in the dimension subfolder. This is done automatically for dimensions that have their own configs. A global options file can be created by placing the file in the /config folder. This will set the default option values for new worlds.

Location Description
Global Options config/ Create manually if needed.
World Options [world folder]/ Created automatically when the world is created.
Dimension Config [world folder]/[dimension folder]/ Created automatically when the dimension is first loaded for dimensions that have their own config file.

Can also be created manually if needed.

For each dimension, COG loads any options files it finds in order from least-specific to most-specific starting at the level of the config file.

Location of Config File Option Files Loaded
Global Config Global Options => World Options => Dimension Options
World-specific Config World Options => Dimension Options
Dimension-specific Config Dimension Options only

Option files do not need to have a value for every option defined in the config. Any that are left out simply use the value from the previously loaded file, or from the default encoded into the option definition if they don’t appear in any file at all.

Example

In-Game Options

CustomOreGen provides an options during world creation. The options and values shown are from the Global config file. The player can adjust the values before creating the world, and the results will be used to create the world options file. If the world already has its own config file or options file (because the player created them manually before creating the world) then the options has no effect.

The can be opened by clicking the Custom Ore Generation . button in the world creation . Mousing over the option names or values will bring up a tooltip description.

Display Groups

Options can be organized into Display Groups, which appear as tabs at the top of the . The element defines a display group, and has the following attributes:

Attribute Default Value Description
name [Required] The group name. Group names are not case sensitive. No other group or option may have the same name. It is ed (but not required) that group names be a word with no whitespace.
displaye n Whether or not the group is visible.
  • n groups are not visible
  • shown groups are visible
displayName group name The name to be displayed in the Options .
displayGroup none The parent display group in the options . This group will only be visible when its parent group is selected.
description nothing A short description of the group. Used as -tip text in the Options .

Option Types

Choice Options

A Choice option is a string chosen from a set of possible values. It is represented in the in-game Options as a button that cycles through the values. The element defines a choice option, and has the following attributes:

Attribute Default Value Description

  • shown_dymanic options are visible, and changing them will up other options that depend on the new value
displayName option name The name to be displayed in the Options .
displayGroup none The option display group in the options . This option will only be visible when its group (or an ancestor of the group in the case of nested groups) is selected.
description nothing A short description of the option. Used as -tip text in the Options .

elements must contain one or more elements, which list the possible values for the option. A Choice element has the following attributes:

Attribute Default Value Description

displayValue value The value text to be displayed in the in-game Options .
description nothing A short description of the value. Used as -tip text in the Options .

Numeric Options

A numeric option is a floating-point value between some minimum and maximum. It is represented in the in-game Options as a slider bar. The element defines a numeric option and has following attributes:

Attribute Default Value Description
name [Required] The option name. Option names are not case sensitive. No other option or display group may have the same name. It is ed (but not required) that option names be a word with no whitespace.

description nothing A short description of the option. Used as -tip text in the Options .
displayMin min In the Options the «true» value in the range [min-max] is shown as a «display» value in the range [displayMin-displayMax].
displayMax max In the Options the «true» value in the range [min-max] is shown as a «display» value in the range [displayMin-displayMax].
displayIncrement (displayMax-displayMin)

/100

The size of one slider increment in the Options . The option value will be rounded such that the «display» value is some even multiple of this increment.

Special Options

Options generally have meaning only within the config file. There are three options, however, that get special treatment from CustomOreGen:
