How to use x360ce emulator with Grim Dawn on PC
In this tutorial you will find steps to make x360ce work with Grim Dawn. This method also works with any game – just do the same easy steps, no special skills needed to make any controller work as an Xbox 360 gamepad. Emulator allows your controller (joystick, wheel, gamepad, etc.) to operate as the most common device, recognized by most of the games without any additional settings and workarounds.
1. The first step is to download x360ce zip file from official site. You have to select 32 or 64 bit version (same as the version of Grim Dawn you use). If you don’t know the version of your game or download wrong one accidentally, you will be notified later and have a chance to use another version.
2. Now we have to find the installation folder of your game. You can easily do this by looking into game shortcut settings or finding the game in your Steam library list. If you choose the Steam variant, right click the game name and select “Properties”.
3. Navigate to “Local files” tab and press “Browse local files. ” button.
4. Now you need to find the folder with Grim Dawn executable. In the example picture they are located in Binaries / Retail subfolder. You need to extract downloaded x360ce ZIP file to folder with your game executable file.
5. Click on x360ce exe file with the right mouse button and select “Run as administrator” from dropdown menu.
6. You will see window with warning – “xinput 1_3.dll was not found. This file is required for emulator to function properly.” Don’t worry, just click “Create” button to make them appear.
7. When x360ce will inform you that new device was detected, use automatic search for settings from internet – just hit “Next” button.
8. Click “Finish”, when installation completed.
9. Hit the “Auto” button to make all settings set to defaults. Confirm changes by clicking “Yes” in popup window. All the buttons will be filled automatically.
10. Now just hit “Save” button to make all your settings saved. You can also change buttons assignment before hitting “Save”, if you like.
Now you can normally launch Grim Dawn and use your controller with x360ce emulator – it will be starting automatically with each game launch.

Grim Dawn natively supports XInput controllers as of build 31 which was just released.
To get your controller operating quickly, click «Options Menu», then click on the «Keybinding» tab at the top. On that screen there is a tick box to «Enable Gamepad». Click «Enable Gamepad» then click the «Default» button. When you click «Default» with the «Enable Gamepad» checked, it forces the game to load defaults for your Gamepad. Now click «Ok» to save your settings.
Your Gamepad is now configured to run with Grim Dawn.
You can take this farther with personalizing button assignments. To do so you just click with a mouse on the «Secondary» text field of the setting you wish to change (you want to avoid assigning anything in the primary field if possible). The interface will then ask you to press the key that you wish to bind to that action. Instead of a keyboard key, use the actual device on the Gamepad instead. You can choose from all the normal controls on a gamepad excepts for L3 and R3. L3 and R3 are reserved for using the joystick as a mouse cursor, and accessing other menus.

Just a heads up to the people who want to use a gamepad with this game — Elite and Ultimate become pretty fast-paced and you can die rather easily, especially on some of the bigger bosses. If you end up with a class that has multiple spells, you might run low on hotkeys for the controller. ARPGs are suited for keyboards.
That’s old world thinking. I’ve played them all on day one excepts for POE since it was online only. This game has made Gamepad the real deal.
You can assign all essentials and still have enough left over for 7 skill slots. 8 if they combine «Pick up item» and «Interact» into one function. The game in the recent patch also created long range auto targeting for game pads. All you do is fire the skill with a button. Secondly, holding L3 allows you to stand in place while changing direction to fire. Now gamepads can do that too.

Because other people getting the option is a bad thing.

I find it ironic specific subset of PC users are so restrictive on what controls a game must adhere to, especially so on a platform that entirely emphasizes all about customization and having options.
It makes you wonder if some truly take advantage of the PC’s they own with such arbitrary limitations they impose upon themselves.

Pretty sure the vast amount of PC users are aware that controllers are the better option for some games, but this is the first ARPG on the PC that has support for controllers. Games like Dark Stone and the Diablo series were available on the Playstation but every ARPG that’s been released for the PC has been strictly keyboard and mouse.
Dungeon crawlers just work better with a keyboard and mouse. People have already reported the controller has targeting issues and manually firing at long-range is a bit finicky. This doesn’t happen when using a mouse. There are many aspects for certain genres that put one peripheral above the rest but that doesn’t mean that you can’t play comfortably with the one you choose. If you’re the type that is planning on taking a character into Hardcore Ultimate and be able to facetank Loghorrean, you’re probably not using a controller. If you just want to casually play a character until you get bored with the game, then a controller might work for you.

The original reasoning for a lack of gamepad controls in Point N Click style aRPGs was generally a lack of hotkeys for skill usage since one could assign as many as one wanted using a keyboard and mouse configuration.
Generally most solutions to solve this issue have been inelegant in the past, with some clever thinking this problem could easily be solved.
This would be my solution to the problem.
The start button could be used for accessing the main menu, and the select / back button brings up your character status screen with a tab for inventory, mastery, and devotion.
The 4 D-Pad directions are assigned to specific functions, Left for Health Potion, Right for Mana Potion, Up for Map, and Down for Journal
The four face buttons and two shoulder buttons could be tied to specific customizable actions in combination with the triggers. Giving you 6 commands. Holding the Left trigger or Right trigger would change the commands for each button.
6 actions without triggers, 6 actions with L trigger, and an additional 6 actions used with the R trigger, which means you have theoretically 18 hotkeys total with just using a gamepad. If you want to get this even further you could hold both L and R triggers for fourth series of 6 actions and push this up to 24 but at this point I think it starts to become cumbersome for quick actions and immediate response.
As for the thumbstick buttons, I suppose they could be assigned to Devotion and Mastery if you don’t want to use the tab method.
However most of the time gamepad support is generally an afterthought without much planning, however just the quick example I brought up just shows there are ideas that could be taken advantage of with a bit of thinking outside the box to get around the issue using the Triggers as a shift key to get up to 18 possible commands.
Of course when it comes to precise aiming and needing to stand in place when using a ranged weapon, a mouse / keyboard might still be a better solution, however my idea shows that the lack of hotkeys isn’t really an issue with gamepad usage.

True and Dragon’s Dogma worked around this issue by having the shoulder buttons bring up the skill menus — effectively turning the four buttons on the right into eight different skills.
Aside from buffs, I don’t believe anyone will have more than five skills they use in-game constantly, but the more I moved up in difficulty on all my characters, the more I found myself using the potion buffs I previously discarded. In the end, it added up to a lot of different keybinds and my Sorcerer being a semi-glass cannon was constantly popping potions and buffs as well as slinging spells while dodging and kiting enemies. I just don’t see non-tanky characters surviving past Act 1/2 Elite using a controller due to how much kiting will be involved on some of the bosses (Gutworm comes to mind for fast-paced spell-slinging then running) as well as some of the Monster Infrequents. I can only imagine how annoying it would be to reach the end of Steps of Torement only to find that you don’t have as much cold resist as you thought and not being able to quickly enough to throw some spells then run again before Alkamos comes out of his Shadow Strike.
