VMware Workstation 4.5
Using Drag and Drop
Using Drag and Drop
With the drag and drop features of VMware Workstation 4, you can move files easily between a Windows host and a Windows virtual machine. You can drag and drop individual files or entire directories.
You can drag and drop files or folders from a file manager, such as Windows Explorer, on the host to a file manager in the virtual machine or vice versa. You can also drag files from a file manager to an application that supports drag and drop or from applications such as zip file managers that support drag-and-drop extraction of individual files.
When you drag a file or folder from host to virtual machine or from virtual machine to host, Workstation copies the file or folder to the location where you drop it. This means, for example, that if you drop a file on the desktop icon of a word processor, the word processor opens with a copy of the original file. The original file does not reflect any changes you make to the copy.
Initially, the application opens using a copy of the file that is stored in your temp directory (as specified in the %TEMP% environment variable). To protect any changes you make, choose File > Save As from the application’s menu and save the file in a different directory. Otherwise it may be overwritten or deleted by mistake.
To disable or enable drag and drop for a virtual machine:
- Open the virtual machine settings editor (VM >Settings), click the Options tab and select Guest isolation.
- Select Disable drag and drop to and from this virtual machine to disable the feature. Deselect it to enable the feature.

Workstation 10.
это работало для меня на нескольких виртуальных машинах, где у меня была такая же проблема, включая мою Windows 10 VM:

Drag&Drop Support in VMWare Fusion
I am using VMWare Fusion 8.5.8 on MacOS 10.12.6 with a guest of MacOS 10.12.5.
Periodically drag and drop stops working. Usually I can reboot and it will start to work again. This time a reboot did not fix it.
I contacted VMWare and they declined support because they claim it does not work and it never worked. They sent me this link supposedly supporting that, but by my reading it does not support their claim: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1032440
I am quite sure that I use drag and drop between the guest and host previously as it is part of my development workflow.
Further supporting my claim that it previously worked I previously submitted a ticket about it not working, but by the time the support person got back to me I had to reboot and no longer had a test case for them to work on. They then suspended the ticket.
If someone could run a quick video of drag and drop working on they similar setup I would appreciated getting a copy so I could send it to VMWare to get them to take my issue seriously.
What can I try to get drag and drop to work again?
[EDIT] I updated the guest machine to 10.12.6 and drag and drop started to work again. Problem solved except I want to get to the bottom of it to keep it from happening in the future.
I just got this email from VMware claiming that this feature does not work:
** Please do not change the subject line of this email if you wish to respond. **
Thank you for your response.
This feature is not supported. Kindly refer the knowledge base article which lists the limitations for VMware Fusion 8.5.8 and also for the latest Fusion 10.
The feature may have worked in the earlier builds or may work intermittently with the newer version. However, we have checked with the engineering team and they have confirmed that we do not support the drag and drop feature.
These were the inputs which were shared directly from the engineering team: For MacOS guest, Drag & Drop/Copy & Paste file is not supported, it only supports copy text between guest and host. Like copy a string in TextEdit from guest and paste it to host’s TextEdit.
So, it’s not a bug
We request you to submit a feature request.

Hello. I have an Alienware 17 R5 laptop with Windows 10 Pro x64 installed. I recently installed VMware Workstation 15 Pro and then I installed Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon x64 as a new VM. Everything is fine and shared folders work, but, both copy and paste and drag and drop do not work, no matter the direction ( ie. to/from guest/host ).
I’m using VMware Workstation 15 Pro version 15.0.2 build 10952284 and I have the latest, I believe, VMware Tools installed with a version of 10.3.2-9925305.
In the VM’s setting under «Guest isolation» I have both «drag and drop» and «copy and paste» checked.

Vmware : Enable Drag and Drop files and folder between virtual machine and host
It was working to me , that i could drag a file / folder from Ubuntu virtual machine and drop it on windows 7 desktop , but for no know reason it stopped working .
How to fix this issue ?

I found a solution :
Reinstall Vmware-Tools and , that will uninstall the old installation .
Then restart your machine .
If you do not have time to restart your guest or reinstall vmware-tools, you can try to start again the vmware-user-loader like example:
I restarted the virtual machine and it (drag & drop) worked!
Drag files out the bottom (and/or maybe right side?) of the Ubuntu window. In 18.04, the top and left side have menu bar and dock which seem to interfere with dragging out.
