So this is a bit of a weird issue since it’s not me, (I don’t have a pro controller), but a friend. She says the pro controller doesn’t work with any game but it doesn’t work with MBAA, even when launched through the game’s files and not on steam. We enabled controller support in controller settings, but that didn’t seem to change anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: we loaded a community config for a pro controller, didn’t seem to change anything either.
EDIT 2: we successfully got the controller to work via launching the game through big picture mode, but ran into a strange issue in which up and the Y button are swapped.
ASW games seem to be weird when it comes to input detection. They were made with XInput in mind, so most third-party controllers will require a wrapper to play properly. However, sometimes, using a wrapper (like Steam’s controller support) makes things even worse, with the game refusing to recognise inputs.
So trying to use a non-XInput controller and launching the game via the executable or with Steam’s controller support won’t recognise the controller, but if you try using the latter, it won’t work either because the game won’t properly detect the controller.
I don’t have a Switch Pro Controller to test stuff with, but I’d say to look for a controller preset for Steam’s controller support, try making one, or use another wrapper.
Hope this helps!
Ironically, I’d like to add that the game does in fact support directinput controllers, which is an issue because the game recognizes directinput from your ds3/ds4/switch controller as controller one and your emulated inputs as controller 2. There’s a config file in system where you can swap the player1/player2 inputs to fix it.
Damn, you’re right. Also, that’s the first time I see someone mentioning that file (I never thought about checking it myself since I never had issues with the game’s settings). Thanks for the heads up!
So yeah, if it’s only a problem of swapped buttons now, it should be fixable by editing the config file as you said, or the community config’s preset in case there’s an error in it.
This is the contents of the KeyConfig file in the SYSTEM folder which saves your control configs, I’ve noticed that P0, P1, P2, and P3 are devices identified in their connected order. This is important because it always seems to detect PC/ds3/ds4/switch directinput’s first above all else, then the emulated Xinput from Steam/XOutput. What allows you to change the order of priority is P0_Num, P1_Num, P2_Num, and P3_Num. They take entries from 1 to 4, which is interesting because this game only supports two players, so what I’ve done in this entry is make my cyborg rumble pad controller number 3 and made the xbox pads (which steam emulates) 1 and 2.
Keep in mind renaming the controller entries does nothing, it will always show up as the first entry. I’ve also noticed that the game only writes to this file when you enter controller config, leave it, and then close the game. Hope it helps

The game using DirectInput as default could be due to its roots, since there was a PC version before this one, and this new edition is likely partly based on the arcade build. And since XInput controllers are mostly compatible with DirectInput (depends on the implementation, from what I’ve seen), it might actually be full DirectInput here.
Anyway, my config file looks like this (I had forgotten I could actually play it with my SNES-like controller):

Logically speaking you won’t have to rebind anything for the X360 controller part, since I should be using the default bindings and Steam’s controller support maps stuff to a virtual XInput controller. Oddly enough my DirectInput controller only has some buttons swapped around, and I never edited the bindings since I thought it would also mess stuff up for my X360 controllers.
Hope it helps as well!

I got my Microsoft Xbox 360 wired controller to work by doing this workaround:
-go to Steam settings > in-game > uncheck «use big picture overlay»
-restart Steam
-do not try to launch the game through Steam client, if you do so you’ll have to restart Steam to get the controller to work properly.
-launch the game by double clicking MBAA.exe (you can find it by right clicking on Melty Blood > properties > local files > browse local files.
-after that my controller worked fine, I checked in controller options and it was assigned to P1 like it should.
-after you play MBAA you have to restart Steam before playing other games otherwise controller settings for other games might get messed up.
Ughhhh I had that once before with another game, such a pain in the ass. Are these guy’s not patching controller support anymore? If not, I don’t really fancy the idea of all that p1ss1ng about to get it running hahah

I got the same issue with xbox one controller. All my other fighting games work perfectly with my controller except this one? Somebody have an idead what can I do?

Start the game with the .exe file, not the Steam launcher. It’s the best solution while we get something better
It works but only in a really broken way. It’s letting me play as player 1 but, it’s also registering the same pad as player 2 simoultainiously!?
Not entirely sure what’s going on as I can’t change it on the in-game settings & I know I only have 1 pad plugged in with only 1 pad profile allocated in steam to player 1.
I wish devs would just make all controller support the no.1 priority at all times!

A guide to get your controllers working with MBACC or give you an idea on how to get yours set up. This guide’s information is still rather limited since it’s only tested with XBOX One, DS4 & Dualsense.
Depending on your controller, inputs could behave differently or not at all. Many of the factors contributing to this problem is the game’s own input detection and Steam Input being enabled or disabled. More information is below.

Did this guide help you? Rating this guide will help people find this guide, especially for new players or players like me who reinstall the game and have to remember to set it up again.
I don’t have other controllers to test with, so please provide some feedback about other controller combinations for those visiting this guide.
Turn on Steam Controller Configuration and tick on Dualshock 4 and XBOX One.
Navigate to your game’s local files, which is the game directory, and make a shortcut from the game’s executable. It’s the one whose filename is .exe
Then, create a shortcut from it. You can send it to the desktop.
Disclaimer:
There is an option on Steam Library that allows you to automatically create a Desktop Shortcut; however, this shortcut is not the same as the shortcut you’re creating above. It’s equivalent to launching the game from Steam Library and your controllers will not work.
One last thing you have to do now is to run the shortcut as an administrator. Go into the shortcut’s properties and navigate to Compatibility. Under Compatibility, tick on «Run this program as an administrator» and click OK or Apply.
From now on, remember to launch Melty Blood from that shortcut instead of from Steam Library.
As of July 3rd, 2020, both controllers have been working together for me.
Launch Steam with admin privileges and then launch your Melty Blood shortcut
Someone encountered an issue until they ran Steam as admin. So here are the steps.
If you don’t have or know where your Steam shortcut is, here you go
If your controllers are not being recognized, try this out and hopefully it works. For me, it doesn’t matter if Steam is ran as admin or not as long as I launch the Melty Blood shortcut we’ve created that runs as admin.
Someone couldn’t get it working until they ran Steam as admin and also had set Steam Input Per Game set to Forced Off from Manage Game in Big Picture. This is something you could also try. This didn’t work for me, especially when I’m trying to play with both DS4 and XBOX controllers. So play around with Steam Controller Configurations and its options in Big Picture mode.
Menu item navigation is crazy and Player 2 is not moving
Sometimes, the game registers both controllers as player one. You’ll find the navigation moving fast because it’s reading from both controllers (doubling the input). Just restart the game and it should assign the controllers properly.
As much as I love playing with the Dualsense, it’s a little problematic to use it with other controllers that are not using DirectInput on MBACC.
You can disable Steam Input for MBACC and it’ll be working since Dualsense is using DirectInput and the game should work well with other controllers using DirectInput. Or you can enable Steam Input and use a controller template from the community’s Steam controller templates to play alongside controllers using XInput. I recommend templates like these ones by Acid Efflux if you are trying to get a Dualshock/Dualsense working together with an XBox (One/Series X) controller:
These templates can be applied to other controllers, not just Dualshock 4s
