Clipper

This page provides information about the Clipper in V-Ray for SketchUp.

Overview

V-Ray Clipper is a geometric primitive that can be used to clip away parts of the scene. It is a render-time effect and does not modify the actual scene geometry in any way.

UI Paths

||Extensions|| > V-Ray > V-Ray Objects > Convert to Clipper

||V-Ray Objects Toolbar|| > Convert to Clipper

||Asset Editor|| > Geometries (right-click) > Clipper

||Asset Editor|| > Create Asset > Geometries > Clipper

Creating Mesh Clipper

The Mesh Clipper can only be applied to group or component objects in SketchUp (sometimes referred to as closed geometry). After creating a Mesh Clipper object, a bounding box with a Mesh Clipper icon appears in the viewport around the selected group or component. The bounding box and icon represent the newly applied Clipper object properties.

The Clipper object can be copied between groups or components by placing them inside a new group or component. The object then receives all associated object properties.

By applying a material to the group or component, the Clipper object absorbs the applied material and use that applied material and UV Mapping for the clipped faces.

The Mesh Clipper can be enabled via the toggle under the Swatch Preview.

Parameters

Mode – Determines how to use the mesh when Mesh mode is enabled.

Subtract – Clips away anything inside the specified mesh; only renders objects and parts of objects outside of the specified mesh.
Intersect
– Clips away anything that is outside the specified mesh; only renders objects and parts of objects inside the specified mesh.

Use Object Material – When enabled, the clipper uses the material of each clipped object to fill in the resulting holes. When disabled, the material applied to the clipper object itself is used.

Material – Specifies the material used by the clipper. This parameter is disabled when object material is used instead.

The input slot ( ) of the Material has a context menu available when you right-click on it. You can also drag-and-drop materials into the slot.

You can Copy, Cut, Clear the selected material or Paste as Instance another material into the slot.

Options

Affect lights – When enabled, the clipper affects area light sources as well.

Camera Rays Only – When enabled, the clipper affects objects as they are directly seen by the camera, but they appear unchanged to reflection/refraction/GI rays.

Clip Light Geometry– When enabled, the clipper clips light geometry (for example a mesh light).

VRay Clipper — Replace mesh with clipper toggle not working

Next Update 1.1, Max 2019.3

The enable/disable button appears to be broken. Enabled or Disabled has the same affect. The clipper object can be anywhere and the mesh position will always be used as the actual clipper.
The replace mesh with clipper, should do just that, but it doesnt. The clipper just turns into the shape of the picked mesh, but I still have to use the mesh to cut, instead of the clipper

Attached a stripped scene

As you can see there is a cube, with 2 cylinders and 2 clippers
Cylinder 1 is associated to clipper 1 (Replace mesh with clipper ENABLED)
Cylinder 2 is associated to clipper 2 (Replace mesh with clipper DISABLED)

However the result of both are the same

Actually the «Replace mesh with clipper» toggle only affects the action of the «Pick mesh» button:
— if «Replace mesh with clipper» is ON when you pick a mesh — the mesh will be replaced in the scene with the clipper object
— if «Replace mesh with clipper» is OFF when you pick a mesh — the mesh will NOT be replaced and the clipper will just reference it

Once the mesh is picked — the «Replace mesh with clipper» toggle doesn’t have any effect.

Best regards,
Yavor

So what is the point then? I just did that test with a new clipper and object. No matter what the state of the «replace mesh with clipper» is in BEFORE I pick the mesh, it results in the same!

Says: «Replace mesh with clipper – Specifies what to do with the mesh that is picked through the Pick mesh button. When enabled, the mesh is moved as a sub-object under the VRayClipper object and the clipper takes the place of the mesh. If disabled, the clipper just references the picked mesh.»

Let say you have this simple scene:

with two boxes.
If you create a clipper, use the default state «Replace Mesh with Clipper» ON and then pick Box002 you get this:

The clipper now replaces the Box002 and you only have two objects in the scene — Box001 and the clipper. Position of the clipper itself determines where the cutting happens.

If instead of that you created a clipper and chose «Replace Mesh with Clipper» to be OFF and then pick Box002 you get this:

The clipper stays a separate scene node positioned somewhere else and you still have Box002 in the scene as a separate geometry. In this case cutting happens where the clipper mesh (Box002) is located. In this mode the clipper itself acts more like a helper that you can put somewhere on the side. In this mode you can also modify the cutting geometry (Box002).

Overall this is the same as the Mesh light option «Replace mesh with light».

Exactly, this is what I’m saying, in the scene I sent, I ALWAYS have 5 objects in the scene (1 cube, 2 cylinders and 2 clippers), no matter what state the «Replace Mesh with Clipper» was before I selected it. In your screenshots it seems to work. What I’m saying is in my simple scene, (that I attached) it is NOT working like that, IE the cylinder and clipper is always seperate objects and the clipper DOES NOT replace the mesh

Using the same Max and V-Ray and your scene everything still seems correct:

If things differ on your side — can you record a small video showing the problem ?

Apologies for the late reply Yavor.
I still think there is something wrong still with that function. When adding the vrayclipper, it is added as a simple plane cutter.
1) You then enable mesh mode, and pick the mesh (with the replace mesh with clipper enabled) — This changes the clipper to the shape of the mesh you picked
2) HOWEVER, you have to REPEAT the operation NOW, to again select the mesh, ONLY THEN does the clipper actually replace the mesh. In my steps, I missed this 2nd step as logically it was already suppose to work in step 1.

So now with that double function out the way, I have another issue, or perhaps a feature request.
1) If I then copy that clipper created in step 1 and 2 above, all works great. It cut holes nicely everywhere
2) However, if I instance that clipper, only the latest copy actually functions and cut holes, the rest that was created (instanced) before the last instance, is ignored. It would be great for it to work as expected, even when instancing it.

Section map with Vray 3.4 for Sketchup | Mesh clipper

This sketchup video tutorial is based on the new features of v-ray 3.4 for sketchup 2017. One of the most exciting features is the rendering cuts with the use of the default sections of sketchup. It signifies that it identifies the plans of section traditions.

The mesh clipper or VRayClipper belongs to a geometric primitive that is applied to clip away parts of the scene by a simple plane. It is a render-time effect and the actual scene geometry is not revised in any way.

The Mesh Clipper can only be used to group or component objects in SketchUp (sometimes also called as closed geometry). Once a Mesh Clipper object is formed, a bounding box with a Mesh Clipper icon will be visible in the viewport around the group or component that has been selected. The bounding box and icon symbolize the newly employed Clipper object properties.

The Clipper object is replicated among groups or components by arranging them within a new group or component. The object will then obtain all related object properties.

With use of a material to the group or component, the Clipper object will engross the material that has been used and employ it and UV Mapping for the clipped faces.

Mesh clipper vray sketchup

Past in Place.

* Используйте функцию Purge Unused (Window > Model Info > Statistics > Purge Unused) либо плагин Purge All для очистки файла.

Google 3D Warehouse.
