Got a beefy 980ti or SLI setup but still can’t run Physx on HIGH & get maintain 60fps during a heavy fire fight or combat scenario? Tired of people suggest to just turn off physx or forget about using it because it is broke?
Do this tweak for a workaround fix.
(This tweak isn’t really meant for low end GPU that can’t already keep up regular non-physx graphics. It is meant for higher end systems. I suggest one of the many other optimization guides out there.)
Change the value higher or lower to fit your needs.
Some optional additional physx related tweaks
I got a powerful GPU, why does physx on high drop my fps so much.
Simple truth. CPU bottlenecking.
Huh? Isn’t hardware physx done by the GPU? Why is cpu bottleneck the issue?
Yes, Physx is processed by the GPU, but it still needs the CPU to feed it data. With physx enabled, especially on high, there is a lot more work for the CPU. All those tiny particles and effects all has to be kept track of and fed to the physx engine.
But, I have the newest CPU with X number of cores
Sadly, Physx in BL2 is heavily dependent on single-thread processing power. Even modern high end processor isn’t enough.
My cpu utilization is never 100% neither is any of my cores
You won’t see 100% utilization because the game doesn’t take full advantage of all the cores. Individual cores will unlikely show full use either because the main thread bounce around different cores. When you look at utilization numbers those are averages over a span of time not the instantaneous demand.
How does tweaking MaxParticleResize help?
MaxParticleResize is the max number of particles generated in BL. The default is MaxParticleResize=0 which basically means unlimited amounts. This is will cause your CPU to fall to it’s knee in heavy combat. Lots of elemental effects, bullets and projectiles from multiple enemies and players all needing physx processing.
Changing MaxParticleResize value to something besides zero reduces the amount of particles that need to be processed. You will need to experiment with what value works best. MaxParticleResize=1 will give you amazing FPS, but you won’t see any bullets or projectile effects. MaxParticleResize=1024 might be too much for you to handle. For me MaxParticleResize=256 on a 3570K 4.4Ghz lets me maintain 60fps for the most part in really heavy combat fights.
I see some people claiming 60+ fps with physx on high without the tweak
Yea, those people probably have not ever been in a heavy fire fight with 4x co-op players all shooting elemental weapons and spamming nades everywhere. Likely, they set their settings to max with physx on high and run around an open field with 1-2 enemies demoing. I don’t consider that heavy combat.

PhysX comes included with Borderlands 2, so you don’t need to have it separately installed for advanced PhysX effects. Of course, if you don’t have an NVIDIA GPU, the CPU will be used for all of the effects.
I suggest you copy all of your configuration files elsewhere, then delete the entire configuration folder in order to let BL2 create new files. Located at Users\ \My Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\Config in Win7. Running the game after this should set everything to the default values. You’ll need to change some settings in-game if you don’t like the defaults.
If that doesn’t make the game as playable as you want, or breaks something, you can always restore the copied files you backed up.
It didn’t turn off the advanced PhysX effects?
Do you have Steam’s Cloud feature enabled? If so, you might be downloading saved versions of the config files from there. You should try again but after disabling Steam’s Cloud for BL2 first.
If not, what happens when you set PhysX to Low after creating the new files? (BTW, there is no «Off» for PhysX as PhysX is the primary physics engine, and basic PhysX features such as gravity and ballistics are always on.)

It has always been part of the game, it has PhysX even on low. However, at least in the past if you had an AMD card and have not had an NVIDIA card before PhysX was not something you could set, it was on low and could not be changed.
I have it but if I look in Uninstall a program I see NVIDIA PhysX as does both of the PCs in this house that have AMD cards. I went to nvidia.com to get it and install it.
I don’t really feel like formatting a drive and reinstalling everything to see if that has changed though.

Since I don’t have an AMD card, I can’t say this from experience. only from what I’ve read in these forums, but supposedly if an AMD user changes the «PhysXLevel=x» entry in WillowEngine.ini to anything other than the default, it makes the PhysX option changeable inside of BL2.
Regardless of the UI issue though, just changing that setting to «2» should enable all of the advanced features for AMD users even without installing PhysX separately.

OK, just for S&G I uninstalled NVIDIA PhysX, rebooted and loaded Borderlands 2, I can now not change PhysX from low.
Care to link me to that ini mod to get it? I will google too.
Ok, good to know that’s not the way to make that setting changable while in-game. I wonder if that’s out of date info due to a change from GBX or if I was mistaken or if other people were mistaken. (It also makes one wonder how the OP got that setting to ungrey itself.)
So, did you also try out the game with that set to 1 and 2 to see how the effects looked without PhysX installed separately?

This guide will show you the PhysX Benchmark Tool and how to get it running on your game. For some reason Gearbox added this benchmark tool a while ago in a patch and never released a way for the end user to use it. It is not complete, as in it does not monitor your fps and give you end results. To do so in game, read on.

This Video will show you the Borderlands 2 Physx Benchmark Tool
(Running on Physx setting = High).
For intructions on How to install, Read everything carefully below. The process is pretty simple. First we need to disable the «say» feature only when the console is open which essentially enables the full functioning console. Without disabling it, when you type «open benchmark» your character will just say «open benchmark» so we need to disable this while the console is open. afterwards we just enable the console by giving it a key binding.
1.Download Hex Workshop 6.8(latest version as of this video(link below) and install it. ( for this tutorial, you do not need to restart your PC after installation)
2.Browse to your Borderlands 2.exe file. Usually located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\Common\Borderlands 2\Binaries\Win32
3.Make a backup of your Borderlands2.exe file by right clicking the file, and selecting copy. Now paste it into any folder but remember where it is in case you want to revert these changes.
4.Right click on Borderlands2.exe and select «Hex Edit with Hex Workshop» A big scary window with lots of number will pop up. Take deep breaths, This is a lot easier than you think it will be.
5.Go to Edit at the top, Find, and make sure Hex Value is selected for the box «Type» Now search this hex value 83C40C85C0751A6A
6.Now you will see it highlight a few values. The value we want to change is under ROW 1E(EDIT: Row numbers can change, look at image below). The VALUE we want to change is C0. Change «C0» to «FF» by clicking on the number and typing FF. Just to know you are in the right spot, There is an 85 to the left of C0 and a 75 to the right of it. Only change C0 to FF.
7.Almost done! Now go back to Edit, Find and this time you want to select «Text String» as the «Type». Now in the same window, under «Options» select «Unicode String» and check the box for «Match Case»
8.Empty the content of the box «Value» and type in «say». This is Caps sensitive. Now you will see 73 00 61 00 79 00 hilighted.(Notice the word «s.a.y» highlighted in right pane»
9.We want to change the 3 values «73» «61 and «79» to all read «00» by clicking each box and typing 00 in each one.
10.Now after changing the values above, we can finally go to File and click Save. It will ask you if you want to make a backup. Just say yes. You can now exit the hex program.
11.To get this working, we have to do a very simple change in the config files. Navigate to the config files which are usually at C:\Users\Forkinator\Documents\My Games\borderlands 2\willowgame\Config
12.Open the files called «WillowInput.ini and press CTRL + F. Type in ConsoleKey and hit enter. you should see it highlight «ConsoleKey=» now to enable console, just type in the key you want to use. It should look like this if you want to use the
key to open console. ConsoleKey=Tilde
13.Save the file and exit.
All done!
13. Now just start up the game and at the main menu screen, press the console key you defined in WillowInput.ini. Type into console «open benchmark» and it will load the Physx Benchmark that Gearbox made for Borderlands 2.
You can do this with any map that has been defined and made. For a list of areas you can do this with, go to the thread at se7ensins.com linked below
For a List of console commands, Go back to your WillowInput.ini and scroll down to «Console». It will say something like
ManualAutoCompleteList=(Command=»Stat FPS»,Desc=»Stat FPS (Shows FPS counter)»)
For this example, «Stat FPS» is a command you can type into console to show fps. You can use this during the benchmark to see your fps.
The INI also gives info on what each command does.
I am not held responsible for any problems that may arise to your borderlands 2 game. If there are any problems, just take the backup Borderlands 2.exe you made and put it in your X:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\Common\Borderlands 2\Binaries\Win32 folder and overwrite the existing modified version.

Borderlands 2
Just want to say if you do go down the re-installation of drivers route you could give the driver removal tool a whirl just to be sure you get rid of residual junk.
Do not download the drivers as «standalone» versions from the Nvidia site.
First, download and install again the Nvidia software (control panel, experience, etc.). Install all of them. Restart. Then, through this new client, search and install the newest drivers. Restart.
DO NOT auto-optimize the game’s settings in the panel. If you know what you’re doing, tweak them yourself. I recommend only forcing v-sync, BUT ONLY if it won’t work directly from Borderlands.
This solved the problem for me. I have a GTX 970 as well.
Edit: you should be able to play max settings and highest PhysFX, and get some steady
75-80 FPS (at least). I am able to get 90+ FPS most of the time.
