Python, Pyautogui, and CTRL-C
I am attempting to complete a simple process of opening a web/browser based document, selecting a field within said document, and then copying it so that it goes into my operating system’s clipboard. Here’s the specs :
Windows 7 Google Chrome ( latest stable ) Python 3.5 pyautogui for keyboard/mouse control
Here is the field I am trying to work with ( http://screencast.com/t/jt0kTagb ). When that little arrow is clicked it pops open to reveal a calendar to pick a date. If you click directly in the field instead it highlights the field’s contents. When I manually press CTRL+C in this situation the field’s contents go right into the clipboard as expected.
I’ve tried two methods of getting the field to go into my clipboard. The first was leveraging pyautogui’s keyDown/up and press functions which essentially looked like :
I then attempted to just use the app menu that appears if you right click on something which looked like this:
Lastly I tried the pyautogui.hotkey() function which looked like this :
In all three events the field is indeed selected and as best as I can tell the keypresses are going through as all other presses/functions that happen prior go off without a hitch.
The problem that I am facing is that when I do this manually in the same fashion as both of those scripts above I am able to get the contents. When I use the scripts, the clipboard is never updated/populated with the field’s contents. Is there something I am overlooking or not considering when working with Python and Window’s clipboard?
In the end all I am trying to do is put that value into an excel sheet. Any advice would be appreciated!

Sending «Ctrl-C» hotkey combination does not work #102
Comments
AWPelican commented Sep 14, 2016 •
I’ve been searching for a solution to this for several days, but am beginning to wonder if I’m just looking at a bug.
I have a script that needs to copy to the clipboard using Ctrl + C, but somehow sending this key combination has lost functionality in pyautogui.
There is no exception thrown, and it appears everything is executing as it should be. However, the desired text is not copied to the clipboard. Copying the text manually using Ctrl + C (on my actual keyboard) does cause the desired text to be copied. However, when running pyautogui the clipboard remains unchanged.
I am also running Windows 7 and Python 3.5, as is Todd Lewden, the author of the Stack Overflow question.
The «Cheat Sheet» on Read the Docs indicates that this functionality should be present in pyautogui:
Keyboard hotkeys like Ctrl-S or Ctrl-Shift-1 can be done by passing a list of key names to hotkey():
pyautogui.hotkey(‘ctrl’, ‘c’) # ctrl-c to copy
pyautogui.hotkey(‘ctrl’, ‘v’) # ctrl-v to paste
I’m not sure at what point sending the «Ctrl + C» combination became broken, but it looks like it worked at some point, according to the above reference to the documentation.
I had a thought that perhaps it has to do with «Ctrl + C» being a Python keyboard interrupt, but I don’t know that that is the case. If it were, Python should come to a screeching halt when the Ctrl + C is sent. It appears to execute without error, except that it doesn’t work.
The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:

alt+tab #93

I am not sure why, but pyautogui.hotkey(‘alt’, ‘tab’) doesn’t work!
But it doesn’t work as well. I tried use sleep function before pass ‘tab’, but I had no success.

I have just realized that pyautogui.hotkey(‘alt’, ‘tab’) works on Ubunutu.. So the problem is running on Windows.
If I insert pyautogui.keyDown(‘c’) on Ubuntu I have ‘cccccccccccccccccccccccccccc’, but on Windows it returns just ‘c’. it means that do not really have a keyDown. Maybe the problem or solution goes on this way.
dragon788 commented Jan 24, 2017
@hugoesb Is there something else on Windows that may be limiting the key repeat rate? Do you have some more details about the version of Python and pyautogui that you tested with on Windows and Ubuntu?
hugoesb commented Feb 3, 2017
I’m using Windows 8.1. The Ubuntu is 16.04. If I keep one key pressed (not using pyautogui, but really pressing the key) it works, so I guess that there aren’t anything limiting the key repeat rate.

On Windows 7 64-bit using Python 3.4.4 and 3.6.0 running pyautogui.hotkey(‘alt’, ‘tab’) works fine for me.

Do other keyboard combinations work?
asweigart commented Mar 19, 2017
This person seems to be having the same issue with alt+tab, though other combinations seem to work: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/36112689/pyautogui-alttab-hotkey-doesnt-work
asweigart commented Mar 19, 2017
Issue #102 seems to be very similar to this one.
SuvanshKumar commented Oct 30, 2017
I use
pyautogui.keyDown(‘alt’)
pyautogui.press(‘tab’)
time.sleep(0.2)
pyautogui.keyUp(‘alt’)
It works on both Windows 7 and 10, however, the hotkey does not work.
andrewleppala commented Dec 14, 2017
pyautogui.hotkey(‘alt’, ‘tab’, interval=0.1)
You need a little interval or they press at the same time. When you alt-tab with your fingers you always press ALT first, so the macro must ALT first.

Hi, just in case someone having issues with the hotkey alt+tab on windows 8, it can be fixed by modifying the registry.
Below is the link to update registry and get it to work in case not working with hot key.
I fix it using this one.

Fix this issue on Windows 8.1 using this one too.

Actually, I use win32gui to switch between windows, and that is more convient than use alt+tab .
I leave the solution here in case that someone might find it useful.

That worked for me as well using Windows 8.1. Due to the ephemeral nature of the Internet though, I’ll post the key points of that article for that fix in case that article/site ever gets deleted (which happened to one of the other links on this very issue already).
Windows key + R opens the run dialog, then enter «regedit» and press enter.
Navigate to the registry path
Create the following value
- Name: AltTabSettings
- Type: DWORD (32-bit)
- Value: 1
Note: Several users reported that the above value was already in the registry, and deleting it solved the issue.

Keyboard Control Functions¶
The write() Function¶
The primary keyboard function is write() . This function will type the characters in the string that is passed. To add a delay interval in between pressing each character key, pass an int or float for the interval keyword argument.
You can only press single-character keys with write() , so you can’t press the Shift or F1 keys, for example.
The press(), keyDown(), and keyUp() Functions¶
To press these keys, call the press() function and pass it a string from the pyautogui.KEYBOARD_KEYS such as enter , esc , f1 . See KEYBOARD_KEYS.
The press() function is really just a wrapper for the keyDown() and keyUp() functions, which simulate pressing a key down and then releasing it up. These functions can be called by themselves. For example, to press the left arrow key three times while holding down the Shift key, call the following:
To press multiple keys similar to what write() does, pass a list of strings to press() . For example:
Or you can set how many presses left :
To add a delay interval in between each press, pass an int or float for the interval keyword argument.
The hold() Context Manager¶
To make holding a key convenient, the hold() function can be used as a context manager and passed a string from the pyautogui.KEYBOARD_KEYS such as shift , ctrl , alt , and this key will be held for the duration of the with context block. See KEYBOARD_KEYS.
…is equivalent to this code:
The hotkey() Function¶
To make pressing hotkeys or keyboard shortcuts convenient, the hotkey() can be passed several key strings which will be pressed down in order, and then released in reverse order. This code:
…is equivalent to this code:
To add a delay interval in between each press, pass an int or float for the interval keyword argument.
KEYBOARD_KEYS¶
The following are the valid strings to pass to the press() , keyDown() , keyUp() , and hotkey() functions:
