Sets a custom URL to load in new tabs. Choose from:

Your custom tab can also be a local file, allowing you to create your own new tab page. Saving blank text will cause your new tab to be about:blank.

Files can begin with: file:\\ , file:// , and file:///

Important: This is not meant to replace your homepage, only new tabs. If your browser is set to load the New Tab page as your homepage, there may be odd consequences.

If you use the built-in New Tab Redirect Apps page, you will be able to type directly into the omnibar. If you use a custom url, the architecture of the extension can not allow for focusing or clearing of the omnibar.

Google Chrome extensions do not currently have access to interact with the omnibar for highlighting after the new page is created. There is an experimental API to retrieve values and detect user input in the omnibar, but it does not allow extensions to highlight the text. I’ve tested version 1.0.1 of New Tab Redirect! across numerous developer builds, and the cursor only occasionally ends at the end of the omnibar. However, this is handled by Chrome itself and can not be modified via the extension. As soon as Chrome offers this functionality, I will implement it. Until then, it is possible to use CTRL+L to quickly highlight the omnibar.

«Can I purchase your extension?»

Absolutely not.

I get emails asking this question at least once a week. This extension is not now, nor will it ever be, for sale. I’ve turned down offers between $100 and $50,000: I’m obviously not kidding about this so please don’t continuously pester me and waste my free time.

First of all, this extension is released under the MIT license. You are basically free to release this extension under a different name and of course provide attribution to me in some way. This extension will always be 100% free and open source in this way. You’ll be starting your user base at 0, that’s just how it works.

Secondly, the only reason people have asked to purchase this extension is because it has nearly a million regular users. Many developers are looking for some quick cash and attempt to purchase very popular extensions so they can secretly add anonymous data gathering, injected ads, or some other third-party code. I don’t like that crap in extensions I use, why would I want it in an extension I’ve created? I respect my users far too much to allow for this kind of shady business to happen to my extension. Again, I’m not joking. I’ve discovered an extension I loved silently sending every visited page to a third-part marketing firm. I immediately reported that extension to Google and it was removed from the web store within two hours.

I don’t need supplemental income, so don’t ask to purchase the extension or try to get me to include your code with my code. If you want to contribute, that’s fine, but I will absolutely never include code that sends or receives data anywhere other than syncing with the user’s Google Account.

Lastly, the only way to sell you my extension with all those coveted users would be to relinquish the rights to my Google Account (james.schubert@gmail.com). This account is about 90% of my online identity, so that will obviously never happen. I realize it’s possible to jump through hoops with Google to transfer ownership, but that’s not something I’m willing to do. Sorry, it’s as simple as that. If I’m wrong and transferring ownership also transfers users, I frankly don’t care.

Customizing Chrome’s New Tab page

Chrome’s New Tab page can be rather handy if you frequently visit the same sites although as with most software, its default configuration may not be ideal for all. Google has baked in some basic customization options for those looking to personalize the new tab page and there’s plenty more manipulation to be had if you venture into the world of extensions.

By default, the New Tab page shortcuts are populated based on recently visited websites. Removing a site from the list is as easy as hovering over the thumbnail and clicking the “X” in the top right corner. In the event you remove a site by accident, simply clicking “Undo” or “Restore all” will undo the last edit or start you over fresh.

It goes without saying that simply closing out a thumbnail will not impact your browsing history (hence why thumbs can be recovered with a single click).

Go Blank or Add a Default New Page

If you’re worried about having your browsing history show up on the New Tab page, you can always make the page blank. This can be accomplished using an extension like Empty New Tab Page or Blank New Tab Page from the Chrome Web Store.

Constantly clearing our your history or surf in Incognito Mode would be an alternative as well.

Optionally, you can replace the New Tab page with a website of your choosing by using an extension such as Replace New Tab Page. Setup is simple and once configured, each new tab will open the website you specify.

Make It Your Own

There are a wealth of additional Chrome extensions that modify and add all sorts of additional functionality to the New Tab page. It’s up to you how far you want to go down the rabbit hole here, however we’d suggest, depending on your browsing habits, go with something that adds a little eye candy or adds to your productivity by adding single-click access to frequently visited sites (Opera/Safari Speed Dial style).

Momentum replaces your new tab page with a calm yet powerful and customizable page, which brings you cool daily wallpapers, weather info, search, an inspirational quote and to-do list which can be tied to your account in Wunderlist, Trello, or Google Tasks. Dream Afar is somewhat similar to Momentum, it’s as slick and customizable, but with more emphasis on search and it does keep an unobtrusive speed dial at the bottom of the page.

Dayboard is a popular extension that replaces your new tab page with a minimal to-do list. The idea is to set up to 5 goals each day and kill those off one by one with less distractions. Dayboard will keep a history to show you your progress and can keep tasks in sync on different machines.

If what you want is strictly a Speed Dial extension, there are a handful of good ones to pick from. TabMark (screenshot below) and Speed Dial 2 are both popular and well reviewed.

For pure eye candy purposes, Google’s own Earth View from Google Earth extension displays a beautiful satellite image from Google Earth every time you open a new tab. It will also let you save those images to be used as desktop wallpapers. Unfortunately there is no usable UI on top of the wallpapers, we wish Google added minimalistic speed dial functionality to go with the mouthwatering satellite photos.

It’s worth noting that you’ll want to pay close attention to the permissions that some extensions will ask for. For example, another extension called «Speed Dial 3» which we don’t recommend installing, offers quick access to your apps, bookmarks and history, but it can read and change all your data on the websites you visit, read and change your browsing history and read and change your bookmarks.

That’s a lot of power to relinquish for the sake of convenience; just know what you’re getting yourself into before adding a given extension.

Add a Theme

If you prefer to keep Google’s utilitarian New Tab page, know you can add themes that introduce backgrounds and additional styling without adding extensions in the mix. Trying a theme is as simple as installing it from the Chrome Web Store; if you don’t like it, just go to the Settings menu in Chrome and click “Reset to default theme.”

I’m a bit surprised that Google hasn’t baked more customization options directly into the New Tab page interface although on the other hand, keeping things simple is rarely a bad idea. Such is especially the case considering there’s a robust extension marketplace full of options to add additional flexibility at your own discretion.

X New Tab Page – необычный Speed Dial для Google Chrome

Браузер Chrome от Google по праву считается одним из самых быстрых и технологичных веб-обозревателей, с приятным и лёгким интерфейсом. Однако далеко не всегда он может удовлетворить требовательного пользователя, который привык настраивать всё под себя.

Наиболее остро это касается стартовой страницы (страницы новой вкладки) программы, содержащей ссылки-превью на часто посещаемые вами сайты. Многим, кто пользовался до этого веб-обозревателем Opera, с его знаменитым Speed Dial, или уже устанавливал различные дополнения, доступной изначально в Chrome стартовой страницы может показаться мало. Судите сами: лишь восемь ссылок и практически никаких опций по настройке этого стартового экрана под себя, а также никаких дополнительных возможностей.

Решают эту проблему расширения – лёгкие и бесплатные дополнительные модули, которые доводят до ума уже имеющуюся в Chrome функциональность, либо и вовсе добавляют в него совершенного новые возможности.

Скачать расширения в любой момент можно из Chrome Web Store, ссылка на который есть в менеджере расширений браузера.

Самые популярные среди стартовых страниц для Chrome, что имеются в этом каталоге, имеют название Speed Dial по аналогии с подобной функцией в браузере Opera. Одному такому расширению мы не так давно уже посвятили подробнейший обзор.

Однако их разработка в прошлом году неожиданно остановилась и многие из Speed Dial’ов для Chrome не обновлялись уже полгода или даже больше. Поэтому сегодня мы расскажем о другом расширении, которое называется X New Tab Page.

Как и все расширения, этот модуль абсолютно бесплатен, а его загрузка и установка занимает считанные секунды.

После инсталляции X New Tab Page заменит собой привычную страницу новой вкладки Google Chrome. Если же удалить модуль, что выполняется всего в пару кликов, всё вернётся в исходное состояние.

Итак, чем X New Tab Page лучше варианта, что предлагается по умолчанию? Во-первых, вы не будете ограничены исключительно восемью превью-ссылками на любимые сайты. Их теперь может быть гораздо больше.

Отныне вы сможете создать до 21 такой ссылки, причём дополнительно у вас появится возможность сделать стартовую страницу Chrome ещё и много вкладочной.

Таким образом, сделав, к примеру, три вкладки, вы получите в своё распоряжение уже 63 ссылки, что удовлетворит даже самого требовательно пользователя.

Внешний вид таких ссылок-превью полностью настраиваем. Вы сможете легко менять их форму, для этого предусмотрено четыре варианта, включая даже круглые превью вместо привычных квадратных.

Для каждого элемента, размещённого на X New Tab Page, вы детально сможете настроить такие параметры, как размер, объём и уровень прозрачности. Легко настраивается и расстояние между элементами, а также отображения подписей к ним.

Непосредственно сами превью страниц дополнение может генерировать самостоятельно, делая мини-скриншот, либо используя логотип сайта. Кроме того, в качестве превью вы можете установить любое изображение со своего компьютера или дать ссылку на картинку в сети.

Как и Speed Dial в Opera, X New Tab Page позволяет установить на страницу новой вкладки собственный фон. Причём в отличие от норвежского браузера, X New Tab Page имеет встроенный каталог таких изображений, что открывается нажатием на кнопку «Cloud».

Изображения, разумеется, не идут в комплекте с расширением, но при клике на любое превью в этом каталоге выбранная картинка мгновенно загружается в качестве фона стартовой страницы.

Заметим, качество изображений – отличное, а загрузка происходит молниеносно даже далеко не на самом быстром Интернет-соединении.

Из дополнительных возможностей X New Tab Page отметим собственные варианты менеджеров закладок и расширений, что появляются в виде всплывающих окон прямо на странице новой вкладки. Хоть и новых функций эти менеджеры с собой не несут, нам они показались весьма удобными в плане организации интерфейса.

Кроме того, в X New Tab Page присутствует небольшой путеводитель по самым популярным в сети веб-сайтам.

Если обратиться к встроенному в Chrome диспетчеру задач, то окажется за все вышеперечисленные функции, пользователь должен «заплатить» примерно от 40 до 55 мегабайт оперативной памяти, что в эпоху много гигабайтных конфигураций, на наш взгляд, не так уж и страшно.

В целом, расширение X New Tab Page для Google Chrome является отличным аналогом Speed Dial из Opera, сочетая в себе массу настроек, милый и не испорченный излишними эффектами внешний вид, умеренные аппетиты по отношению к ресурсам компьютера, а также стабильность и надёжность работы.
