Microsoft Flight Simulator

Looking at Youtube there aren’t any reviews/videos on this product for the last couple of months.

Is anyone using this , and if so could you share if you think the product is worth getting, and if the transitions have been improved since release?

Seems like an active thread.

Personally I’m waiting for HiFi, love Active Sky in XP and P3D. Used REX Sky Force in P3D before, didn’t like the weather engine but loved the clouds. I use their clouds in combination with Active Sky in P3D.

yes, it make the weather real time, and top of that it fix alot of the msfs weather bs, plus the weather and clouds are better

I am using REX Weather Force and really enjoy it. I use xEnviro in X Plane 11 and Active Sky P3D in of course P3D. REX was only $23 so I went ahead and purchased it and haven’t regretted doing so. And I’m glad I did because the default weather is still pretty much messed up. The support staff is very proactive. When the last update broke REX they had a fix out within 24 hours. Currently they are working on updates that will generate snow on the ground immediately based on current conditions. The current released version will generate snow on the ground if it is currently snowing.

I figure I can always purchase Active sky if and when it comes out for FS2020 but so far (comparing how REX looks compared to Active Sky XP and Active Sky P3D) I will probably just keep using REX.

i thought about this why dont the game engine just use a decent forecast program.

It does use forecast data and that’s the issue really. Because it doesn’t rely just on METAR data then things end up slightly off at airports compared to the real world. It is however being improved on every few patches, a recent patch brought things much closer to real METAR data for many areas. The devs also already mentioned more cloud formations are being added to the game soon (no date set at this time though).

There are advantages/disadvantages to using both systems of course. The forecast data might not be 100% accurate all the time, but it blends seamlessly with transitions between weather types being smooth and textures don’t repeat often. REX and active sky etc are more accurate at airports and reporting stations, but the blending between zones isn’t perfect and areas where there aren’t reporting stations usually get filled with repeating/inaccurate weather patterns.

I’m quite happy to hold off on purchasing any 3rd party weather apps until i see how things develop with the current Meteoblue live weather system.

Is there any performance hit?

There’s really no performance hit at all if you let the weather change instantly. (Not very realistic but you do get the actual weather for an area.)

Rex has a setting that will slowly change the weather for more realism but for some reason it comes with a massive FPS hit. I’ve had times descending through stormy clouds when it would tank my 45 FPS on RTX3080 to around 6 FPS and just seem to stay there until I disengaged live weather and then restarted it. In my opinion Rex transitions have not improved since release.

I actually prefer the default live weather when it works but still use Rex on occasions when it doesn’t. I actually wouldn’t recommend it in it’s current state.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I think I’ll hold fire on Weather Force for now and see what develops.

Does anyone have any views on whether Unreal Weather is worth a look?

The issue is that MS has not, and stated they will not, be opening up the weather engine to third party developers. REX found a way to write over the current world weather using a METAR based approach — which is great if you want realism for takeoff and landing — it does awesome. BUT — it writes it for the world. When you transition between METAR areas (closest reporting airports) you get world updates. not local updates. There is nothing they can do about it until MS opens up the API for weather. EVERY developer for weather tools faces this problem. Unreal Weather addon does the same thing — world updates. I’ve had it work some. for the price it’s adequate if you want real-time METAR based weather.

While I’m a REX owner I’ve found that I’m now just defaulting back to MSFS ‘live’ (forecast) weather. The way the engine depicts weather is just amazing and even through at my local airport (F70) it does an awful job at times because it bundles us in with coastal California (rather than being on the other side of a coastal mountain range which has completely different weather) I find on balance I’m ok with dialing down the realism, not being able to do real flight planning using aviation weather sources and all that. it’s good enough. Over the next few years (ugh) they’ll fix the ATIS reporting issues. they’ll hopefully pay off their current weather provider enough so the can open up the API some. Things will get better but in the end it’s a Sim with simulated forecast weather conditions that may come close to reality if you live in an area that doesn’t have a lot of microclimates.

And if you fly in areas that have limited weather reporting — take Papua New Guinea as an example — NOBODY has good weather sourcing. so nobody can do a great job of depicting it. In this case MSFS is no better and no worse than anyone else. But what MS does well is showing bands of weather so you’ll have a better chance of getting into clear conditions for landing than if you used a global weather add-on like REX or Unreal.

Over the next few days, we will be optimizing the servers, so there may be a few brief outages, but we expect these to be very small and limited.

Again, thank you all for your patience during this time.

Sincerely,
The REX Information Technology Team

Dear REX Customer,

It has been one of our goals as a company to always look for ways to improve the way we offer our services. Over the past 6 months we have noticed a severe degradation in the present firm we used to host our data servers. This has led to numerous un-needed outages for our customers.

Therefore, we have started investigating a new hosting firm to house our data. We are excited to announce that we are reached the final stage of implementing a new level of service to you, our customer.

Starting at 00Z (5 PM PT/ 8 PM ET) today we will start the process of moving our data services over to our new data servers. However, consequently we will have a temporary, but extended outage with our servers during this time. Therefore, REX services will be down during this time. We expect to have all services back up and fully operational by 00Z (5 PM PT/ 8 PM ET) Sunday, May 2nd.

What services will be impacted by the outages:
– Weather data
– Community data
– Product registration
– Product verification

What products will be impacted by the outage:
– REX 6 Weather Force 2020
– REX 5 Environment Force
– REX 5 Sky Force 3D
– REX 5 Worldwide Airports HD
– REX 4 Texture Direct with Soft Clouds
– REX 4 Texture Direct – Steam Edition
– REX 4 Weather Architect
– WX Advantage Radar
– REX AXIS

We thank you for your patience through this transition, but we believe this will provide an improved experience for you as our customer as well as position REX in a place to expand to new horizons into the future.
