Rosetta Stone Microphone Detection Fix!

After discovering that Rosetta Stone was not detecting my proper usb headset microphone, and wasting a bunch of time trying to figure out why not…I have resolved it.

I was reading online that Rosetta Stone has issues with Windows 7 microphone detection but soon discovered that it wasn’t that case for me. Many of the so-called “fix-its” did not work for me. The most common being that you should set the compatibility mode to Vista SP2 and set it to always run in administrator mode. In fact, after doing this, it wasn’t even detecting my default laptop microphone (go figure!).

What I discovered is that Rosetta Stone Microphone Detection is based on the name of your microphone! For example, I have a higher end headset and under my microphone properties in the audio dialogue box (inside control panel), my microphone was simply called headset. This made my question why Rosetta Stone was detecting my “Realtek HD Microphone” that came factory installed on my laptop. Well the most obvious difference was that mine was named “Headset” while the Realtek had the word Microphone in it. I renamed my “Headset” to “Headset Microphone,” restarted Rosetta Stone, and Low and Behold, it now detects my microphone!

I hope this will help some of you out there who have been struggling to get Rosetta Stone to detect your microphone. In case you are wondering, I am doing this all on a Windows 7 64-Bit OS.

Troubleshoot Microphone Errors in Rosetta Stone

Please review the following support options if the microphone (external or laptop/internal) on the device you are using Rosetta Stone with is not recognized. This information can be found with Rosetta Stone’s Troubleshooting Documentation:

Rosetta Stone’s speech recognition rate heavily relies on the quality of the signal that it is supposed to analyze. If you have experienced difficulties with the pronunciation activities this document might help.

1. Is Rosetta Stone’s Speech recognition installed?

Rosetta Stone’s speech recognition consists of two software packages:

• the Speech Engine (i.e. the piece of software that analyzes the user’s recordings)

• the Speech Models (i.e. the data that the user’s pronunciation is compared with)

If the installation does not succeed automatically at first launch both components can be downloaded from the following link – they both need to be installed on the learner’s computer. https://download.trstone.com/productsupport/RS_Speech_Models_and_Engine_Installers.zip

The Zip file needs to be saved to the hard drive and then unpacked from there. The Zip file includes installers for

Mac and for Windows PCs (XP, Vista, Win 7 and Win 8 are supported).

2. Adobe Flash Player Settings

You may need to allow Rosetta Stone to use the signal from your microphone. When you launch Rosetta Stone for the first time and click on one of the activities you should see the following box:

Please click ‘Allow’ and make sure that the check box ‘Remember’ is ticked.

If you do not see this box you can right click somewhere in Rosetta Stone and select ‘Settings’ (as shown below).

3. Windows Microphone Settings

Another possible reason for unsatisfactory recognition rates is when the microphone signal is too low or too loud. If it is too low, the computer artificially makes it louder, but this will add noise to the recording – and make it difficult to understand for Rosetta Stone’s speech engine. If the signal is too loud the recording’s quality will suffer from it too. Ideally the microphone volume should be set somewhere between 75 and 90 %.

Above is an example of how to make changes to the microphone settings in Windows 7 (you should be able to find screenshots for XP, Vista, Win 8 or Mac OSX on the internet without any difficulties):

Click [Start] and choose ‘Control Panel’ from the menu. Go to ‘Hardware and Sound’ and select ‘Manage audio devices’.

Go to the ‘Recording’ tab and double click on your microphone.

4. Make sure that Rosetta Stone recognizes your microphone

Learners who do not use a USB headset might encounter technical issues if their microphone is not detected by Rosetta Stone’s speech engine. To verify the settings start an activity and select ‘Set Preferences’ at the top right hand corner.

Please note that even though the speech recognition usually works fine with built‐in laptop microphones or analog jack plugs Rosetta Stone officially requires the use of a USB headset . Tech Support won’t assist you if you are not using a USB headset.

Please note: You cannot make changes to the speech precision level yourself. This setting can only be changed by your administrator / teacher.

List of recommended headsets: Altec Lansing AHS302i, Andrea Electronics NC‐7100, Califone 3066‐USB, Logitech USB 350, Logitech USB 250, Logitech ClearChat Pro USB, Logitech H330, Logitech Premium Notebook Headset, Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB, Microsoft LifeChat LX‐3000, Plantronics DSP‐400, Plantronics DSP‐500, Plantronics Audio 500, Plantronics Audio 470, Plantronics Audio 645, Plantronics Audio 655, VXI Talk Pro USB‐100, VXI Talk Pro USB‐200

5. Skype / VoIP / Google Voice

Please make sure that Skype or any other VoIP software is deactivated when you are working with Rosetta Stone as the audio protocols may interfere with each other (and cause problems). If you are using the Google Chrome browser, please check the Google Voice settings.

6. Tip: Do not eat your microphone!

If you headset microphone is placed too close to your mouth this can result in so called ‘plops’. You might have seen videos of studio recordings where singers have a black disk between their mouth and the microphone. This device is called a ‘plop killer’ and it makes sure that phonemes like ‘p’, ‘t’, ‘k’ do not sound distorted on the recording. It also keeps the singer/speaker at a good distance of the microphone.

If you do not place your microphone in front of your mouth but next to it your recordings might sound significantly better.

Question: Q: Rosetta Stone/Internal Mic not working

I have recently installed Rosetta Stone Version 3 (language software) on my Macbook Pro. I am having issues using the internal microphone with the software.

When I setup the microphone within the software and then do the test (say 1,2,3,4,5 into the microphone as a test), the program tells me everything is working fine. However, during the lessons, when speech recognition is necessary, the microphone doesn’t work.

Firstly, the speaker will say a work, then when it’s my turn, it’s as if the microphone is not being recognized and is quickly turning on and off as if it’s trying to hear something. Secondly, every time the microphone is enabled and disabled, it turns up the microphone input volume (System Preferences > Sound > Input > sliding bar with low to high) one tick until it’s at the top of the bar; thus rendering the microphone useless due to an overload of ambient noise.

Any suggestions or tips? I know Mac users must have this working. However, all the info I can find is a bunch of frustrated Mac people and a lot of finger pointing between Apple and Rosetta Stone.

im having the same problem. internal mic not working with rosetta stone 3.4.5

any suggestions appreciated

I was having all sorts of problems with stuttering input. Like when I set up the mic it wouldn’t let me get to 5, it would say the mic was set up before I even got to 3 and when trying to practice the sound was stuttering horribly.

Then I had an idea. It seems counter intuitive but what I did to fix it was change my audio input device in System Preferences (under sound) to Line In, in other words not the internal built-in microphone. Then in Rosetta I did pick the built-in microphone as my input. I think what was happening for was the OS and Rosetta were both trying to use the mic and that was the source of my problems.

Anyway if you have the same symptoms as me try turning off the mic in the System Preferences app and see if that works. It worked great for me.

Mine is a different problem. And this is with a Mac Pro desktop.

First off, the USB headset never works. I tried the Rosetta Stone-supplied headset and a Logitech G330 (normally used for in-game chatting) and they did not work in the Rosetta program — versions 3 and 4.

I used an external mic and opted for the line input. Rosetta worked perfectly. I went all the way through Level 2. (Language I am learning is German), and even managed to converse with a German online tutor in Seattle (a feature in Version 4’s TOTALe software).

Until two weeks ago. The line input is now kaput. This might have been related to a recent software update they made. The software update has now broken Rosetta and I cannot use any inputs at all. And «kaputt» is not a German word I want to keep learning about Rosetta’s software!

Already called technical support. I am led to believe that there’s something in the software that is refusing to take any input. The tech support call took almost an hour with little progress (I’m sure their technicians have already noted about it). I have nothing against the South Asians here on Apple Discussions, but their tech support team needs work.

Fluenz, though, had no problems. Fluenz is a competing language learning provider, but unlike Rosetta, only offer five languages — neither of them is German — and does not use speech recognition like Rosetta. However, there were absolutely no problems with Fluenz receiving any audio input.

Too bad. Rosetta actually worked wonders — when it worked.

I had the same problem, but I think I found a helpful (but imperfect) fix. As it turns out, when you set the microphone preference to ‘Internal Microphone,’ Rosetta Stone takes it upon itself to change the input volume as it pleases—usually to full. This is bad because the computer will hear a pounding, garbled, static-filled mess instead of the simple word you think you’re saying. I don’t remember how I got to it, but somewhere in Rosetta’s preferences you can listen to how you sound (and visually compare your sound wave to the correct answer so as to tweak your intonation and articulation), and this is where I discovered the problem.

The solution: open System Preferences, go to «Sound,» select the «Input» tab, and then set the «Input Volume» to the halfway mark. The computer will hear you much more clearly, and you should do fine on your lessons. Keep System Prefs open throughout the lesson, because Rosetta Stone will actually reset your input volume to full when you first open the program, to 3/4 when you try to calibrate with ‘1, 2, 3, 4, 5,’ and then back up to full if you happen to mess up too many times in a row thereafter.

It’s frustrating to have to keep on adjusting the volume while you’re trying to concentrate, I know, but at least it gets to the heart of the issue. Perhaps there’s a script floating around that can take care of this, but my (admittedly limited) searches have turned up nothing. Such as it is, I hope this helps!
