So, you’ve found some awesome mods on tf2mods.net or gamebanana.com.
But how do you install these mods? Does it require voodoo or other kinds of witchcraft?
Sometimes, but luckily most of the time it’s just a click of a button!

In this guide I’ll show you exactly how to download and install a mod into your TF2 so it’s ready to use ingame!

For this guide I’m going to give you a nice little present.
Head down to this site and click the big green button. [tf2b.com]

What is this?
This is a small unobtrusive mod that replaces all your backpack icons with streamlined high quality icons. In other words it’s pretty and in a way doesnt change anything significant for you.

So after you’ve downloaded it and opened it with winzip or winrar you should find a .vpk file

After you have downloaded your mod, installing it is just a mouseclick away!

Navigate to the following folder, this is where you have installed your game.

Steam
- steamapps
  - common
    - Team Fortress 2
      - tf
        
        custom

This last folder «custom» is where the game loads all your custom content, so this is the place where you put your mods! Now all theres left to do is copying and pasting the .vpk you’ve downloaded earlier here.

Thats all there is to it, now youre done.
Now the next time you open up your TF2 your backpack should look close to this:

Valve Texture File Editor

Программа для импортирования и конвертирования спреев в Counter-Strike:Source ,Team Fortress 2 и других играх на движке Source.

Как создать спрей:

1) Скачайте и установите программу.
2) Запускайте программу VTFEdit. Вы увидите её окно.
3) Выберите File – Import и найдите на диске файл, который Вы хотите сделать спреем.
Внимание! Размер спрея должен быть 256*256 пикселей (файлы большего размера не принимаются большинством серверов).
VTFEdit поддерживает импорт файлов изображений формата GIF, JPEG, PNG, BMP, TGA и DDS.
4) Выбрав нужный файл, нажмите кнопку «Открыть» (или «Open» в английской версии Windows). Появится окно дополнительных опции импорта. Здесь сразу нажмите «OK«, ничего не изменяя.
5) Вы будете перемещены в главное окно VTFEdit, в котором увидите только что созданный и загруженный спрей. В меню Options выберите Auto Create VMT File чтобы программа наряду с VTF-файлом сгенерировала и VMT-файл (файл описания спрея). Это действие избавит Вас от необходимости вручную импортировать спрей в игре.
6) Сохраните Ваш спрей на диск командой File – Save под любым именем (в имени файла не должно быть русских букв и пробелов, т.е. допустимы только латинские буквы и цифры).
7) Ваш спрей создан и сохранён. Пришло время переходить к его установке.

Как установить спрей:

Откройте в Проводнике Windows папку \Steam\steamapps\common/team fortress 2\tf.
Найдите в ней подкаталог materials, а в нём vgui -> logos. Если их нет, то Вы должны их создать вручную. Структура каталогов должна выглядеть так: \Steam\steamapps\ВАШ_ЛОГИН\team fortress 2\tf\materials\vgui\logos\. Перейдите в logos.
Скопируйте созданные Вами спреи в эту папку (и vtf, и vmt-файлы).
Запустите TF2, зайдите в Настройки (Options) на страницу Сетевая игра (Multiplayer) и выберите установленный спрей из списка в разделе Spraypaint image. Если спрей удалось выбрать и в поле Preview Вы увидели его, сразу нажимайте OK и не выполняйте дальнейшие шаги.
Если у спрея не было VMT-файла, либо Вы его не создали в VTFEdit и соответственно его нет в списке доступных спреев TF2, то под списком доступных спреев нажмите кнопку Импорт (Import Spray…).
В открывшемся окне Import Spray Image переходите по каталогам по порядку – tf -> materials -> vgui -> logos и выберите скопированный Вами спрей. Нажмите кнопку Open.
Теперь спрей должен отображаться в списке. Нажмите OK. Спрей успешно установлен!

I’ve also noticed I have a tf folder in my tf folder? could that be a contributing factor?

That is standard in Source games. The tf folder inside the tf folder is where you want to be.

are you sure? did you extract them properly or was the folder really called » my_custom_stuff»?

Works fine for me. Drag and drop all of the .vpk files in the folder below:

Yes I extracted them properly and i did extract them to my custom folder, made another folder called «my_custom_stuff».

you have to put them in «my_custom_stuff»

♥♥♥♥ i see the problem, just drag the .vpk files in the custom folder, do not put the .vpk files in a seperate folder, if you made a folder inside the custom folder, don’t put the .vpk files in there. Also it doesn’t matter if the folder is called «my_custom_stuff», you can name it what ever you want as long as the main folder is called «custom»

for example: vpk goes to team fortress 2/ tf/ custom
non vpk goes to team fortress 2/tf/ custom/
